½ Day Basic Safe Handling Awareness (Refresher) Course

This half-day course is ideal as an introduction to the safe handling of people or as a refresher course for those who have undertaken the one-day course. Participants will gain a brief understanding of their obligations and responsibilities and have the opportunity to learn about and use a wide range of moving and handling equipment. This is a highly practical course so participants are required to attend in suitable attire and footwear.

Course Outline

The first hour of this short course briefly explores the underpinning knowledge required to support safer handling practices in the workplace:

  • Legislation and Policy
  • Musculoskeletal health and wellbeing
  • Assessing risks
  • Key principles of safe handling practice
  • What not to do (controversial techniques)

The remainder of the course (2 hours) will cover the basic practical skills required to assist an individual to transfer safely:

  • Sit to stand
  • In and out of bed
  • Positioning in bed
  • What to do if someone is falling or has fallen

Delegates will have the opportunity to use a variety of handling equipment including:

  • Mobile, standing and overhead hoists
  • Universal and toileting slings
  • Slide sheets
  • Handling belts
  • Small aids to assist with positioning

Certification last for 1 year.
